Madīnah or Medina is a city in Saudi Arabia. It is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca.
Prophet Muhammad went to Medina after he fled from Mecca. In Medina, Muhammad established the new Muslim community.
Medina was the capital of the Islamic Empire for many years. It was also the centre of religious life.
Medina is home to the three oldest mosques in the world. Prophet Muhammad is buried there in a mosque called al-Masjid al-Nabawi. Non-Muslims are not allowed to enter the sacred core of Medina or the city centre.
