Makkah or Mecca is a city in Saudi Arabia. It is the holiest city in Islam.
It contains the Masjid al-Haram (“Sacred Mosque”). This masjid holds the Ka’bah, regarded as the house of God. This building is one of the few remaining historical buildings in Mecca.
Every year, millions of Muslims take a pilgrimage to Mecca, called the Hajj. They follow in the footsteps of Muhammad. All Muslims who are able to perform the Hajj are expected to do so at least once in their life.
Mecca is closed to most non-Muslims. Only some journalists reporting on the Hajj may enter.
