Pentecost (meaning “the 50th day” in Greek) is a Christian holiday. It is also known as Whitsun or Whit Sunday in some English-speaking areas. It is the 50th day after Easter.

Pentecost remembers when the Holy Spirit came to the Apostles and other followers of Jesus. This event is described in the book of Acts in the Christian Bible. Jesus had promised that this would happen after he rose from the dead.

About 3,000 people were baptized on Pentecost. Because of this, some Christians believe this to be the start of the Christian Church.
