Ascension is a Christian holiday. The word “ascension” means “going up”.
According to the story told in the New Testament, Jesus ascended to heaven after his resurrection. This was seen by his apostles.
The holiday is celebrated around forty days after Easter, traditionally on a Thursday (“Ascension Thursday”) but some churches have “Ascension Sunday” instead.
The Eastern Orthodox Church calculates the date of Easter differently, so they usually celebrate Ascension later in the year than other churches.
Ascension is celebrated by feasting and singing hymns (Christian songs).
