Martin Luther was a monk who lived from 1483 to 1546 in what is now Germany.

He wrote a list of criticisms of the Catholic Church and suggested some new ideas. He tried to change the church from inside, but was excommunicated (sent out).

Luther started the Lutheran Church, the first Protestant church. This helped start the Protestant Reformation, when many churches in Europe separated from the Catholic Church.

At the time, the Bible was usually written in Latin, which few people understood. Luther translated the Bible into German so that more people could read it for themselves.
