A mosque is a place where Muslims worship, study and discuss Islam. In the United Kingdom, many mosques are used as community centres. Religious festivals and gatherings are held in mosques.
Many mosques are famous works of architecture, built in a style that has stayed the same for centuries. They usually have prayer halls, domes and minarets (towers).
Prayer halls usually do not have furniture. Instead, they may have prayer mats or rugs. These are needed as Islamic prayer is usually done kneeling.
