How to handle non-religious views in the classroom

The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, which came into force in February 2015, now places a statutory duty on all schools to prevent people being drawn into terrorism.
Linked to the Government’s 2011 Prevent strategy, schools are now required to address violent and non-violent extremism through creating safe spaces in which children and young people can understand and discuss terrorism including extremist ideas, and learn how to challenge them. Schools will now also be inspected and assessed on their measures to protect their pupils from extremist material.
Consequently, this webinar will:
- Help practitioners understand what is meant by extremism in the context of the Government’s Prevent strategy and the new public duty on schools;
- Explore Ofsted requirements for schools to promote and support:
- Fundamental British values
- Behaviour and safety of pupils in school
- Highlight effective ways to facilitate classroom discussions about extremism and extreme views;
- To consider best practice in challenging risks associated with extremism;
- Explore the risks in challenging extremist behaviour shown by pupils – including how to deal with parents.
Claire Clinton, Religious Education Advisor
Claire Clinton is an experienced teacher within EYFS, Primary and Secondary education. She has over 20 years of classroom experience, and 16 years of advisory work at a national and local level. Claire is presently the Religious Education Advisor for the London Borough of Newham for eight years prior to which she was a RE consultant for the London Borough of Redbridge and Essex County Council.
Paul Kaufman, chair of the East London Humanist group and member of the British Humanist Association
Paul Kaufman is a Legal expert, chair of the East London Humanist group and member of the British Humanist Association. He regularly undertakes school visits to discuss Humanism with pupils.
